An MBTI alternative
By TraitTune team · Published
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator describes four preference pairs and sixteen types. TraitTune uses continuous trait scales. Here is how those reporting formats differ and what to look for when choosing an assessment.
Comparing type and trait formats
People aren't bimodal. On almost every personality measure, most people cluster near the middle, with fewer at the extremes. A type system draws a line through that middle and calls the two halves opposites. The result: two people one point apart on either side of the line get opposite types, while two people on the same side forty points apart get the same one.
A changed type needs context. A type label can change when a reported preference changes. The MBTI provider publishes retest evidence; a change alone does not establish that the assessment is unreliable.
Four dimensions leave a lot out. Academic trait models settled on five broad factors (the Big Five) and later six (HEXACO), with stress response, honesty and several others that MBTI doesn't measure at all. These are the models that personality research has used for decades, and they're built on scales, not boxes.
None of this makes MBTI useless as a conversation starter. It makes it a poor instrument for decisions.
What a trait-based alternative gives you
- A position on each scale, not a side of a line. You see how far from the middle you sit, which is the information a type throws away.
- More dimensions. Resilience under pressure, candour, sensitivity, curiosity, humour, optimism: the things that decide how a Tuesday goes.
- A continuous result. A score can change between attempts without becoming a different type label. The size and reliability of that change require evidence; a scale does not guarantee stability.
What TraitTune does
TraitTune measures 15 traits drawn from the Big Five and HEXACO traditions, each scored on a scale and reported with where you sit relative to the middle. Every answer picks your next question, so the assessment stays short and spends its questions where you're hardest to place. The method, including its limits, is written up in the methodology.
Beyond the profile:
- Compare with consent. Two people, side by side, trait by trait, once both agree.
- An AI companion that knows your profile. Ask about a real situation; the answer starts from your traits.
- Free, including the profile and comparison.

Who should keep their MBTI
If your workplace uses it as shared vocabulary, keep the vocabulary; it's harmless as a conversation. For decisions about a relationship, a team or a job, use something that shows the scale.

Questions people ask
Is MBTI accurate? That requires reviewing evidence for the particular MBTI instrument and intended use. MBTI reports preference clarity, which its provider distinguishes from preference strength. This page compares formats, not validated accuracy.
Is the Big Five better than MBTI? They organize personality differently. Compare the published evidence, purpose and limitations of each instrument. Using the Big Five tradition does not, by itself, establish that TraitTune is more accurate than MBTI.
What's the most scientific personality test? Beware of any test that calls itself that. Look for a scaled model with a published method and honest limits. Ours is at /methodology; read it before you trust us, too.
